Historically, it was the Eastern part of Uganda that had a more established and competitive market, so we are excited to support the fast developing coffee industry in the Rwenzori Mountains of Western Uganda. Nyabubare from this region is quickly finding its place alongside the other great East African lots, and we're here for it!
This coffee is produced by smallholder farmers living in the districts of Bushenyi, Mitooma and Rubirizi. Coffee is typically grown on small family plots and cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness before being carefully processed to highlight clarity, sweetness and balance in the cup.
Nyabubare Washing Station was established in 2021 and is located in the heart of West Uganda. The station supports Uganda's rapidly growing coffee region by providing farmers with a reliable, high-quality market. It's a vital community hub offering growers premium rates for their cherries.
Delivered coffee undergoes a strict quality control before it's pulped and placed into fermentation tanks. The crucial ingredient to this fantastic coffee is the Oro Yeast. First rehydrated, the Oro yeast is then added to wet parchment in the fermentation tanks for 40-46 hours, and meticulously washed with Eco washer to remove any remaining mucilage. Parchment is sundried on raised beds to sundry for 18 to 22 days, and raked frequently to ensure even drying.
Every purchase also contributes to the IMPACT Beyond Flagship program, providing farmers with tool kits that include hoes, spades and pruning saws. This initiative tackles a key barrier to productivity – limited access to essential farm equipment. The washing station also holds training sessions for farmers to empower them to optimize their yields and produce high-quality coffee.
