Introducing our limited release of Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha
A very rare bean just landed in our roastery. Hacienda La Esmeralda Panama Geisha - the pinnacle of specialty coffee.
They might look like regular coffee beans but trust us, they are anything but ordinary. It's the world's greatest coffee ready to find its way to your home. Taste the flavour notes that keep winning so many awards.
Hacienda La Esmeralda completely changed Clandestino Coffee's founder's idea of how good coffee can be when he first tasted it back in 2010.
“This cup is as pleasant as your palette can identify in coffee. It really pushed my boundaries, expanded my flavour range and introduced me to high floral notes such as jasmine or exotic bergamot,”says Jaxon Taylor.
This year, to celebrate our 10 year anniversary of seeking the best flavours and highest quality in coffee, we’re excited to offer our customers the experience of tasting the world’s most sought-after coffee.
Let's have a look at how geisha coffee varietal landed on the map of best specialty coffee. Geisha varietal was discovered by Price and Daniel Peterson on their coffee farm in Panama back in 1996. They found tall, odd-looking coffee trees that were growing wild at the bottom of the farm. They decided to recultivate the hardy trees and move them to the very top, onto a windy exposed hillside where other coffees struggled.
When they entered their first harvest into the Best of Panama competition in 2004, the coffee cupped 94.6 out of possible 100 and sold for an unprecedented price. It had fragrant and tea-like flavours no one ever tasted in Panamanian coffee: ginger, blackberry, ripe mango, citrus blossom and exotic bergamot.
Only later, it was discovered that the coffee originated from the Ethiopian village, called Gesha. Relocated amongst other leaf rust resistant coffee samples, geisha found its way to Panama with perfect growing conditions for it to thrive.
Its extraordinary taste has been described as feeling “streams of light pouring out of the cup” or probably more famously by Don Holly, Quality Control Manager for Green Mountain Coffee, as seeing the face of “God in the cup”.
The Cabaña San José Natural Geisha LOT ES-N-1-4 grows at high altitudes on the Cañas Verdes farm. We purchased the microlot in this year's Esmeralda Special, one of the most anticipated coffee auctions in the industry run by the Peterson Family since 2007. Each year, Hacienda La Esmeralda releases their highest scoring Geisha micro-lots produced in small quantities for roasters from all over the world to bid on.
“The Grand Reserve offers the best of the best, but I knew that this was the one for us. Expect a complex cup with a creamy body unveiling in sweet notes of strawberries & cream, be surprised by sweet and delicate acidity.” adds Taylor.
Cabaña San José Natural Geisha was without a doubt a stand out amongst all samples on our cupping table. Out of the different 50 auction lots available for purchasing, we secured 22kg of our favourite.
You can taste geisha as a pour over in our Noosaville flagship store where we serve it as our Brew Bar special.
